Privacy Policy

This is a plain-language privacy policy for the Scenic Route Society mobile app. It describes exactly what the app does today.

Who we are

Scenic Route Society ("we", "us") is a road-trip planning app. Questions? Email hello@scenicroutesociety.org.

What we collect

• Account info: your email address, display name, and handle, which you give us when you create an account.
• Content you create: routes, stops, saves, check-ins, comments, reviews, and photos you upload.
• Push notification token: if you allow notifications, a device token so we can send you alerts.
• Basic technical data: standard app and server logs and crash diagnostics used to keep the app running.
• Location, while you are using the app: once you have granted location permission, we read your device's position to set a trip's starting point when you ask us to, to sort nearby stops on the home and browse screens, to centre the map when you tap the locate button, and to measure how far you are from your next stop while a drive is running. We only ever read it while the app is open in front of you. We do not track you in the background, and we do not keep a history of where you have been.

We do not sell your personal information, and we never follow you in the background. When you use a location feature, your coordinates go to our map providers so they can look up place names and roads, and they are saved on our servers only inside the trips and routes you choose to save. Delete the trip or the route and the coordinates go with it.

How we use it

• To run the app: show your saved routes, your profile, your check-ins, and the community feed.
• To let you upload and share routes and photos with other members.
• To send notifications you opted into.
• To fix crashes and improve the app.

Who we share it with

We use the following service providers, who process data only to provide their service to us:

• Supabase: accounts, database, and photo storage.
• Mapbox: maps, place search, and driving directions. Mapbox receives the coordinates of the places on your route.
• OpenStreetMap / Nominatim: backup place search, and the source of the roadside stops we suggest along a corridor.
• Google: ratings, reviews, and photos for the stops you look at. We send the stop's name and coordinates to look it up, and your phone loads the photos straight from Google, which means Google sees your device's network address.
• Sentry: crash reports, so we can fix what breaks. These carry your device model, your iOS version, and the technical details of what the app was doing. They are not tied to your account. We filter coordinates out of the web addresses and activity trail attached to a report before it leaves your phone, though we cannot promise that a coordinate never appears inside the text of an error message itself.
• Expo: app delivery and push notifications.

Content you choose to publish (public routes, comments, reviews) is visible to other members and visitors by design.

This website also loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, so opening this page contacts Google. The app itself does not: it ships with its fonts built in.

Your choices and rights

• Delete your account: Profile, then "Delete account." This permanently erases your account, routes, saves, check-ins, and photos.
• Notifications: turn them off any time in your phone's settings.
• Access or questions: email hello@scenicroutesociety.org.

Children

The app is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We'll update this page and the effective date above when this policy changes.
